Hand-Painted Canvas Rugs
Margie Pringle has revived the art of painting floorcloths. Painted
canvas rugs were crafted in Europe as early as the 15th century. Early
American artisans painted them on worn sailcloth. These rugs became
increasingly popular due to their durability, ease of cleaning, insect
resistance, and aesthetic appeal. They blocked drafts through
floorboards in winter and were cool underfoot during the summer.
Today there is a rebirth of historic restoration and an increased
awareness of human responsibility for our environment. Floorcloths meet
all these needs. They retain their Colonial qualities, but adapt to
Contemporary designs.
Margie was raised in Virginia, was a musician in her teen years, and
earned a BA in History from the University of Hawaii. She married a
career Navy man and they moved from coast to coast and to Hawaii and
New Orleans, finally settling on Fleming Island.
Margie’s art began with a project when she was a Florida Master
Gardener. As a decorative artist for 10 years, Margie combines skilled
craftsmanship with artistic talent. She takes pride in creating
functional art using top quality non-toxic materials. Margie is
developing a niche in the Jacksonville area as people discover the
beauty and practicality of painted, varnished canvas rugs. Visitors to
RAM have taken her rugs throughout the Eastern United States. Many live
in Riverside. Her custom rugs are on 100 year old floors in
Fernandina Beach and another rug will live in Western Australia.
Margie believes that all people deserve art in their lives. When it is
art you can walk on, well, that’s good too.
